Managing stress in cattle isn’t new—but how we approach it is changing. From calving and weaning to transport and regrouping, stress is a constant part of both dairy and beef production. The question isn’t whether stress happens—it’s how well cattle handle it.


Recently, more products have entered the market claiming to support cattle during stress using “pheromones” or calming compounds. On the surface, they may sound similar. But when you look closer, not all pheromones are created equal.


A true bovine appeasing pheromone (BAP) is not a generic ingredient that can be mixed or approximated. It is a highly specific biological signal, made up of multiple components in precise proportions. This matters because pheromones don’t work like traditional products where more dose equals more effect.


Instead, pheromones act like a key fitting into a lock:


Cattle detect these signals through the vomeronasal organ—a specialized system designed to recognize very specific molecular structures. If the signal isn’t exactly right, the animal doesn’t interpret it as a calming message at all. Close isn’t good enough.

That’s where differences between products become important.

Small changes in composition, structure, or delivery can mean the difference between a functional signal and something the animal simply ignores. It’s not about weaker performance—it’s about whether the signal works in the first place.

Delivery also plays a major role. For a pheromone to be effective, it must consistently reach the animal’s sensory system. This depends on proper volatility—how the product disperses in the environment. Without controlled delivery, exposure becomes inconsistent, especially during real-world farm conditions like transport or regrouping.

Independent assessments of some “BAP-like” products have shown that key components may be missing or not optimized for delivery. That raises an important point for producers:

Not every product marketed as a pheromone will function as one.

When it comes to research, the gap becomes even clearer. Peer-reviewed studies and controlled trials consistently focus on validated formulations developed through years of research. Claims of equivalence can’t be assumed—they need to be proven with real biological and behavioural data.

So what does this mean on farm?

Stress affects more than behaviour. It influences intake, consistency, and how cattle adapt to change. Whether it’s fresh cows, newly weaned calves, or animals arriving at the feedlot, how they respond in those moments matters.

Using a scientifically validated approach to cattle stress management helps support more consistent outcomes during these events. And in modern production systems, consistency is everything.
